Bacanal del Gnoco: Verona’s historic Carnival
Bacanal del Gnoco in Verona: Carnival and Venerdì Gnocolar

Venerdì Gnocolar is one of Verona’s most distinctive Carnival traditions: a day of masks, floats, music and gnocchi centred on the San Zeno neighbourhood. The parade is a lively way to see local culture beyond the main tourist squares.

The origins of Bacanal del Gnoco

Local tradition links the celebration to a food shortage and unrest in the early sixteenth century. The story remembers Tommaso da Vico, who is said to have arranged a distribution of food to the people of San Zeno. Historical details and popular memory have become intertwined.

Why it is called Venerdì Gnocolar

The name refers to gnocchi, the traditional dish associated with the celebration. The parade takes place on the Friday before the final days of Carnival, with the exact calendar and route announced for each edition.

Who is Papà del Gnoco?

Papà del Gnoco is the Carnival’s most recognisable mask: a bearded figure in red who carries a large fork with a gnocco on it. He leads the procession and represents the food story at the heart of the tradition.

The parade and San Zeno

The parade connects the city centre with San Zeno and draws large crowds. Check the route, road closures and bus diversions for the year you visit; arrive early if you want a comfortable viewing spot.

Practical tips for spectators

Wear comfortable shoes and keep an eye on children in the crowd. Use public transport or walk to the area, and check event updates before setting out. Food stalls and related events may have separate costs.
